Free Bird esta incluida en el primer disco del grupo de la banda de Florida ''(pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd)', publicado en 1973, cuando la formación de la banda era la siguiente: Ronnie van Zant (Voz), Gary Rosington (Guitarra), Allen Collins (Guitarra), Ed King (Bajo), Bob Burns (Bateria) y Billy Powell (Teclados).

Fué compuesta por Collins y van Zant, y su duración es de algo mas de 9 minutos, siendo la canción mas larga del grupo, y consiguió el tercer puesto del ranking de la revista Guitar World 'Los 100 mejores solos de guitarra'.

La primera frase de la canción (If I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me?) fué una frase real dicha por Powell a su por entonces novia. Al grupo le gusto, y decidieron incluirla en el tema Free Bird.

Esta tambien entre las 500 mejores canciones de la historia segun la revista Rolling Stone y en el puesto 26 entre la lista de las mejores canciones de todos los tiempos segun VH1
