Crazy Train fue publicada en el primer disco como solista de Ozzy ('Blizzard of Oz') publicado en 1981. Este fué su album mas exitoso, llegando a vender 4 millones de copias solamente en el Reino Unido. Los acompañantes de Osbourne en el disco fueron: Randy Rhoads (Guitarra), Bob Daisley (Bajo y coros) y Lee Kerslake (Bateria). Las dos canciones mas importantes de este trabajo fueron Crazy Train y Mr. Crowley.

La canción fue compuesta por Ozzy Osbourne, Randy Rhoads y Bob Daisley, y se convirtió en el primer single en solitario de Ozzy tras abandonar Black Sabbath .

Pronto se convirtió en un éxito tanto en Reino Unido como EEUU, y fue versionada por varios grupos y cantantes desde su publicación, entre ellos el ex-vocalista de Skid Row, Sebastian Bach
