Free es una de esos grupos que consiguen un éxito y desaparecen, algo bastante comun en la música, pero antes de desaparecer tras unos pocos años de actividad, el grupo dejo esta canción, una joya del rock en una época clave para el genero, que sin duda influenció a muchos grupos posteriores

Al Right Now, contenida en 'Fire and Water' (el tercer disco de la banda), cuenta con 4:15 minutos de duración, fue compuesta por los dos líderes del grupo, Paul Rogers y Andy Fraser. Con este tema obtuvieron éxito tanto en EEUU como en el resto del mundo, llegando a los primeros puestos en diversas listas de éxitos.

Además, en 1991, se reeditó, coincidiendo con el 21 aniversario de su primera versión. Tambien fué muy versionada por otros grupos tan importantes como Queen y forma parte de las BSO de películas como 'American Beauty' o 'Now and Then'

Hoy es turno de otro grupo mítico, y tambien otra balada

Forever está incluída en el 15º disco de estudio de Kiss 'Hot in the Shade' del año 1989. En este disco (que no tuvo demasiado éxito en comparación con los anteriores), la formacion del grupo estaba compuesta por Gene Simmons (Voces y bajo), Paul Stanley (Guitarra rítmica y voces), Bruce Kulick (Guitarara y coros) y Eric Carr (Batería).

En este tema, esto cambia levemente, siendo Kulick quien se ocupa del bajo, y Stanley lleva la voz principal, siendo en el estribillo donde lo acompañan los 3 componentes restantes

La canción fué compuesta por Paul Stanley en colaboración con Michael Bolton

El tema empieza con la guitarra y la voz de Stanley, entrando poco despues poco a poco la batería, con el bajo siempre en un segundo plano en toda la canción, siendo la batería el instrumento mas importante durante los 3.50 miutos de canción

Derek and the Dominos - Layla

Hoy actualizo con un tema más que mítico y seguro conocido por todos.
Esta canción aparece en el disco "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs", del grupo Derek and the Dominos.



Aunque normalmente el mérito de esta canción se lo lleva Eric Clapton, la canción original fue compuesta por él y por Jim Gordon, el batería del grupo en cuestión.
La canción "Layla" fue publicada en 1970, y como sencillo en el 1971 y 1972.

El título, "Layla", está inspirado en La historia de Layla y Majnun , del poeta clásico persa Nezami.
Está basada en una historia real de un joven llamado Qays ibn al-Mulawwah de la península arábiga en el Siglo VII. Clapton la escribió después de que su amigo Ian Dallas, que en aquél momento se estaba convirtiendo a la religión islámica, le contase la historia.

La historia de Nezami trata sobre una princesa obligada por su padre a casarse con una persona distinta al joven que estaba locamente enamorado de ella, volviéndose éste loco.

La canción está basada, además de en la historia de Layla, en el amor no correspondido de Pattie Boyd. Durante la grabación del álbum Pattie y Eric ya se veían a escondidas, aunque era difícil mantenerlo en secreto. Clapton tenía la esperanza de que esta canción le ayudaría a conquistar definitivamente a Pattie, y que ésta abandonase a su marido por él.

En el apartado musical, "Layla" ofrece tanto en la línea del bajo como de las guitarras una musicalidad y un ritmo rápido, con punteos durante la canción de la guitarra solista, mientras que la ritmica toca la melodía en un tono más agudo.
La batería en cambio no ofrece grandes cambios, solamente un ritmo básico durante toda la canción.
El solo de guitarra se compone de una serie de punteos muy agudos, que se parecen a los tonos de la guitarra de fondo, lo que puede llegar a distraer en algún momento del mismo.
Por último, la voz de Eric Clapton ofrece un tono medio-agudo, más agudo en los estribillos, por lo que sigue la línea aguda de la canción.
Para acabar, la canción tiene dos versiones, una corta y otra más larga con un intermedio instrumental que cambia totalmente el ritmo de la canción a un ritmo más lento y una melodía más pausada, añadiendo melodías de piano en este intermedio.

Como valoración personal, "Layla" obtiene un 8/10.

Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills

Hoy le toca a una de las canciones mas conocidas de un grupo mítico como Iron Maiden

La canción, incluída en el tercer álbum del grupo, 'The Number of the Beast', publicado en 1982 (que fué el primero de Bruce Dickinson como vocalista, sustituyendo a Paul Di'Anno por problemas derivados de sus adicciones), fue el primer sencillo antes de la canción que da nombre al álbum.

Escrita por el bajista Steve Harris, la canción trata el tema de la colonización inglesa en América, tanto desde el punto de vista los indígenas norteamericanos (primera parte) como el de los propios conquistadores ingleses (segunda parte), entrando despues del estribillo un narrador externo a dicha conquista.

VALORACIóN

9'5/10

Una de las canciones con mas calidad de la banda inglesa, lo que es ya decir mucho. Especial atención merece la bateria de Clive Burr que empieza destacando en el inicio de la canción y toma un gran protagonismo en toda la canción, y el bajo de Harris, igual que en la gran mayoria de canciones de los Maiden, tambien tiene un papel destacado en este tema

Dire Straits - Lady Writer

Hoy la entrada va dirigida a este gran grupo, que aparecerá más por aquí en un futuro.

Lady writer fue compuesta en 1979, incluida en el segundo disco de los Dire Straits, "Communiqué".

El título de la canción viene de una novelista, Marina Warner, ya que un día Knopfler estaba viendo la televisión y la vió en su programa.

Musicalmente, "Lady Writer" sigue la línea de temas como "Sultans of Swing", una guitarra rítmica de fondo con un sonido de guitarra limpio propio de Mark Knopfler.

En la línea del bajo, destacan los tonos agudos que contrastan con los graves de las guitarras en varios momentos de la canción.

La batería es simple pero a la vez da un ritmo rápido acorde con las guitarras.

En cuanto al apartado de la voz, como siempre la voz de Mark Knopfler no destaca en los agudos, sino que sigue un tono de voz grave, que como el bajo, contrasta con la guitarra aguda.

Para finalizar, el solo de guitarra se parece al solo de "Sultans of Swing", notas muy agudas y rápidas.

En conclusión, "Lady Writer" es un tema que describe la línea que los Dire Straits sigue a lo largo del disco, línea que triunfó sobre todo en países como Australia o Inglaterra y que llevó al grupo a lo más alto durante dos décadas aproximadamente.

Como valoración personal, "Lady Writer" es para mí de los mejores temas de los Dire Straits, del 0 al 10, mi nota sería un 9

Guns N' Roses - Dont Cry

Empezamos los analisis con una cancion de Guns N' Roses, Dont Cry

Descripción:

Se trata de una canción incluida en el disco "Use Your Illusion I" y en el "Use your Illusion II" (1991), en este ultimo con una letra alternativa. Como hecho curioso, el videoclip de este tema forma una historia enlazada con los de las canciones " November Rain" y "Estranged".

Ademas, la primera versión se desarrollo durante la grabación del disco "Appetite for Destruction", pero no se incluyó en él.

Hay diversas versiones sobre el motivo de la canción, destacando dos versiones: La primera, defendida por Axl Rose, es la de que esta basada en el fin deuna relacción de Izzy Stradlin. La segunda esta relaccionada con la situacion de Axl con su mujer por aquel entonces

9'5/10

Una de las mejores baladas del heavy de principios de los 90. Destacable el registro vocal de Axl, muy distinto al de otros temas, y la apertura de Izzy.
